Portia Twala is the founding member of the Hatchet Foundation which has been established at the back of her
published book entitled “Bury The Hatchet” which officially launched on the 6 th of April 2023.
MRS. PORTIA NOMTHANDAZO TWALA
Portia is a legal professional and has been an Admitted Attorney of the High Courts of South Africa since 2003. She
was previously in the employ of the Director of Public Prosecutions as a State Advocate in the Johannesburg High
Court. She is currently a Compliance Professional employed as an Executive Director Compliance for an
international Bank and is part of a global compliance network exposing her to regulatory risk approaches in
multiple jurisdictions.
She has been a Compliance Professional for over 10 years and have previously served in local
Banks in various capacities including, Head of Compliance for Investec Corporate and Institutional Banking, and as
the Head of Global Markets Compliance for CIB Nedbank. In these roles, Portia was responsible for ensuring that
the Banks comply with all regulations pertaining to the operations of Bank and was a liaison with various Financial
Services Regulators as a key representative for the Banks. In her respective roles as a Compliance Professional,
Portia has set up, grown and led compliance functions/teams successfully. Portia is a self- starter, highly driven,
focused with a result oriented approach to doing business.

She is also a highly regarded Ethics Officer accredited by the Ethics Institute of South Africa. Portia’s passion for her
community coupled with her expertise and mindset as a legal and compliance professional will enable her to
provide sound advice and to ensure the Hatchet Foundation continues to operate as a credible organization and
ensuring it always acts in the best interest of the community.
Portia is also passionate about motivating, guiding and mentoring young people within her community as well as
young professionals within her professional network to ultimately achieve their desired goals. Portia’s passion and
dedication for the advancement of her community has attracted her to serving as a Director of Top-Line Academy
which is an education institute head quartered in Soweto that specializes in tutoring High School students. Top-
Line Academy was founded as an initiative to support township students with the foundational knowledge in
mathematics and driving for excellence in the subject.
Prior to joining the financial services industry, Portia mastered first-hand experience in litigation by working as a
State Advocate of the High Court in Johannesburg, and by serving in various law firms handling numerous cases
and working with Governmental Departments, private clients, as well as corporates.
Portia brings sound knowledge into the Hatchet Foundation. She has recently launched her Ministry of Hope and
Healing in the local church and thereby driving the objectives of the Foundation and strives to provide support,
